The Alaskan Malamute is ...

an Artic Breed above the Rest. A matchless dog, strong, powerful and enduring but also gentle with a unique character in accepting humans as part of their pack. It is our task as owners to understand and satisfy their needs. As an Malamute owner we are required to teach and train them. They are a strong willed breed requiring socialisation which will result in good temperament.

About the breed ...

It is difficult to speak about the Alaskan Malamute in a single article. Only by living with them every day, you will in time understand and appreciate his great qualities of character, temperament and beauty. Only a dog selected by nomadic tribes of Alaska (The Mahlemiuts) could survive in extreme environmental conditions.

Natural selection, as well as selective breeding have contributed to create a matchless dog - strong, powerful and enduring, but also gentle. An interesting feature of the Malamute's character is that they considers you as a part of their pack. Your task is to let him understand who the leader is and teach him obedience and never submission.

The Malamute is a very proud pack animal. This is evident from the fact that when the Musher got lost in the wide expanses of snow, he would trust the lead dog of the pack to find the way back to the camp. On those occasions the man didn't order the dog, but cooperated with him. In such conditions man and Malamute co-operate for survival.

The Malamute isn't a watch dog, but they can discourage strangers thanks to his imposing size. The puppies are lovely, but don't forget they will become 40 kg of strength and tenacity; so, it will be a good start to socialize with your puppy from the very beginning in several different situations, this will make him confident and controllable. Don't allow him to be aggressive towards any other animal.

Just a reminder, no matter how much you love your dog, is not a human.  Malamutes have their own specific needs. Our task as owners is to understand and love them.

Allow him a place of his own yet being part of the family. If you haven't got the time, to give attention and love, we suggest you consider a breed more suitable to your needs.

Many thanks to Giuseppe Biagiotti of "Del Biagio" Kennels, Italy for the lovely boy they have supplied to us. It has taken 3 years to achieve this dream and I have made wonderful friends in Italy with the Biagotti family.

My trip to Italy has given me a greater insight to this wonderful breed and a absolute pleasure in meeting and sharing with so many "Champions" of the breed. I am grateful for their assistance.

First imported Female from Zulem Kennels, Spain:

We would like to thank Johan Mostert of Tomarctus SA Kennels in Gauteng for negotiating and importing Zulem Autumn Flower for us. a Wonderful friendship has developed between Johan and me and this we believe will be to the benefit of the Alaskan Malamute Breed in South Africa. Javier Cabello from Zulem Kennels, Madrid is one of the prominent breeders of Alaskan Malamutes in Europe.

Javier has been involved in Alaskan Malamute since 1988 and produces Alaskan Malamutes of high standards. He has produced a consistent and beautiful type by above other, using lines coming from Giuseppe Biagiotti of del Biagio Kennels in Italy, Vicky Jones of Vykon Kennels and Nancy Russel of Storm Kloud Kennels both from America, Andre Lepine of Chabek Kennels in Canada and Gloria Urbani of Del Lago Degli Orsi Kennels in Italy, who have all produced World and International Champions of note.

The Alaskan Malamute is a matchless dog - strong powerful and enduring, but also sweet and tender. They considers you as being part of their group and always needs to be in contact with you their owner.

DO YOU HAVE THE QUALITIES TO BE A OWNER ?

Guru Chris

The Alaskan Malamute is a special dog. An ordinary dog owner will not be suitable for him.

To have a specimen of the Alaskan Malamute you should be willing to:

bullet  have a lot of patience
bullet  treat him as an exceptional, noteworthy dog
bullet  be willing to dedicate time to your dog(s)
bullet  learn to know your dog for what he in reality is, not for what you'd like him to be.

The Malamute is a primitive dog who has never been subjected to genetic manipulation or crossbreeding. A dog with this background has peculiarities which has to be understood and valued. That's the reason why time and patience are required. This is the only way to appreciate this breed to the fullest in getting surprising results.

The Malamute is a pack-dog and acknowledges authority only if the leader demonstrates to deserve respect. The Malamute has been living for ages side by side with man, sharing his joys and sorrows. He will refuse to be treated like a toy and then be put aside when getting tired of him. He or she must actively be involved in your family's life. Only then will you realize how clever and faithful he is in offering you his/her unconditional loyalty.

In order to get good results, it is important to adopt simple but effective solutions:

As a puppy (2 - 3 months):

bullet Get him or her to know your family's members (parents, children, whoever belongs to your family group), to enable him/her to consider them as "his pack". He will respect them all, and hold the one he considers his Leader in high regard.
bullet As a puppy, it's fairly easy to teach him rules of social behavior: you just need to scold him for any misbehaving in a higher tone of voice (without beating him) and you will soon notice how rapidly he learns.
bullet You must get him/her to socialize with other dogs when he or she is still very young. At an early age, play is his/her favourite past-time, and if the little Malamute is allowed to play with other dogs of different breeds, he will behave himself and show no aggressiveness. Any intolerance must meet a sound rebuke at once.
bullet As to obedience: the Malamute has got a strong decision-making instinct, and he doesn't feel bound to execute orders he considers futile. For example: if you keep calling him without reason, he may ignore you, not because he can't hear you, but because he can't see the purpose of your call. Therefore, always motivate him to do what you want him to. You don't have a robot in front of you ready to satisfy any sudden urge of yours, but a dog willing to help you in any creditable work.

If you follow these simple suggestions above, your Mal will certainly be a cause of great satisfaction to you and your family!

The role they likes best is to be a cuddly family pet and to be a mate and a friend.
