ALBERTS
FARM (Northcliff)
Alberts Farm is a large tract of land with natural grassland,
Joburg’s only artesian spring, marsh, a rocky ridge, grassed lawn
and trees.
EMMARENTIA
DAM
A
large park that is the best dog walk in Johannesburg. There are
several dams for swimming and different habitats such as grassed
lawns, woodland and natural grasses. The northern and north-west
sections (ie.
the picnic area near the main dam, the tea-room, the rose garden and
the botanical gardens) are off-limits for dogs.

GOLDEN HARVEST (Northgate)
A
large dogwalk park in two parts. Part one, the eastern section, is
the manicured and well tended area that has picnic spots, childrens’
playground equipment and grassy lawns dotted with shady trees. Part
2, to the west, is a much wilder mix of natural grassland, small
streams, tall eucalyptus stands and stunning views. So you can
choose your own mix of civility and wildness. A good place to picnic
after the walk – take some snacks and something to drink in a cooler
bag.
HARVEY PARK (Cyrildene)
A
steep and often rocky walk along the spine of the Linksfield Ridge.
Magnificent panoramic views reward your efforts.

MELVILLE KOPPIES - EAST
A
short walk with great views – half on the rocky koppies and half
through the cute suburb of Melville
where you can stop for a coffee and snack.
PARKHURST
A
mix of residential houses, a busy strip of restaurants and shops and
a walk along the meandering grassy banks of the Braamfontein Spruit.

PROTEA PARK (Edenvale)
A
small urban walk along a small river, across a weir and along a nice
windy path. If the litter near the car park and along the river were
collected it would be even more pleasant.
RHODES PARK (Kensington)
A
small but pretty urban park with a lake and a sports field.
Unfortunately it is a little shabby with lots of litter and broken
glass in places.

RHOODEPOORT ATHLETICS STADIUM
A
short walk of about 2 km on the western fringe of Johannesburg. The
walk takes you along a path around a small dam and an athletics
stadium.
SANDTON FIELD & STUDY
A
nice stroll through a treed park and along the shady Braamfontein
Spruit, a few minutes from Sandton Centre.

Bezuidenhout Park
An
urban walk in a 3 hectare “green lung” in east Joburg.
Ernest
Ullman Park
A
pleasant river walk with many amenities surrounded by a plethora of
gated communities. There is a child and dog friendly restaurant in
the park so bring some money.

WAVERLEY RIVER WALK
A
pleasant river walk where the water isn’t too polluted and you can
enjoy a post exercise drink at the Waverley Bowls Club.
MELVILLE KOPPIES (Westren Section)
The best
“wild” walk in Johannesburg with good views, a well marked trail,
and a free trail map at the starting point.

PAULSHOF 3 RIVERS WALK
An almost
perfect urban walk that is suitable for residents and visitors. It
covers the confluence of 3 rivers (Klein Jukskei, Braamfontein and
Sandspruit) and makes maximum use of green strips along these
streams.
Constantia Kloof
A
neat walk that gets the heart pumping, has some stunning views and
has a calming return through a pleasant suburban street.

Delta Park
Probably
the second best dog walk in Joburg. Lots of open space with dams on
the site of an old sewerage farm.
LITTLE FALLS RIDGE WALK
A clean and safe walk for early summer mornings and warm winter
days. Great views, lots of natural vegetation and some good heart
thumping exercise all contained in a neat 3.5 km circular route.

LONG WALK (Emmarentia)
A 12 km walk
for those who have energy to spare. I have joined up several green
spaces and parks in and around Emmarentia. It is an interesting mix
of wild and tamed, of plush and run-down suburbs, of roads and
streams.

BRAAMFONTEIN
SPRUIT
Craighall Park/Blairgowrie
The Braamfontein
Spruit Walk was conceived as a 30km long urban trail. However, in
recent years it has been encroached upon and it is now more
convenient to tackle it in stages (see Delta Park, Emmarentia Dam,
Parkhurst, Sandton Field & Study and Paulshof Walks). This is the
stretch along the spruit that runs between Craighall Park and
Blairgowrie.

BRAAMFONTEIN
SPRUIT
Bryanston
The Braamfontein
Spruit Walk was conceived as a 30km long urban trail. However, in
recent years it has been encroached upon and it is now more
convenient to tackle it in stages (see Delta Park, Emmarentia Dam,
Parkhurst, Sandton Field & Study and Paulshof Walks). This is the
stretch along the spruit that runs
through Bryanston.

GILLOOLY'S
Bedfordview
This a very nice picnic
spot with lake and a stiff walk up a ridge with great views over the
Kensington Valley and North Joburg.
LONEHILL DAM
& KOPPIE
A remnant of parkland
that fills the gaps between the rapacious housing developments of
north Joburg.

THE WILDS
One of Joburgs
forgotten and most beautiful parks have been revived by the tireless
efforts of TJ and his group. But as it is so close to Hillbrow it
remains a place for groups or go on one of TJ's organised twice
monthly walks.
ZOO LAKE
Zoo Lake is a great
park in heart of the wealthy inner northern suburbs. Not only are
their fields to romp around on, but you can pop into Moyos: the best
park restaurant in South Africa; and the Zoo Lake Bowls Club: the
best Joburg pub lunch venue with the best beers on tap.
